14 New Year’s Resolutions for 2014

Heading back from break can be tough, especially if this is your first time in the rodeo. The holiday season rekindles memories from back home, with friends and family around you 24/7. NYC_NYE1

New Year’s resolutions are a fun thing to come up with, but how many of us actually stick to these goals?

For me, I think of resolutions as fake promises to yourself, because in reality, who is going to go to the gym seven days a week, or eat healthy, or change your entire personality for the sake of a new year? Don’t you think you would have done all this last year too?

Well, since I’ve come up with that mission, I have thought of resolutions that are easily adjustable into everyday life, and are kind of fun to conquer. They aren’t lose 25 pounds, or eat less junk food, because I know, at least for myself, that the chocolate is never leaving my life, especially for 2014.

So here they are, my extra fun New Year’s “resolutions“:

1. Focus on yourself a little more. This is the year to take some “me” time and be happy. Focusing on yourself does not mean shutting the world around you out, but instead making sure you are your own top priority instead of being pushed and pulled by the opinions of other. Take an hour a day to really self reflect and I promise you will realize how much of a great person you are.

2. Make a new friend. This is not that hard, and does not take much effort. Being social and learning things about someone else will make you an all around happier person, because in life, the more the merrier. This person doesn’t have to be your best friend, but go get some coffee and learn something new. You may even have a lot in common with that person.

3. Go on an adventure. This does not have to be anything wild, yet it does not have to be anything simple. Go on a hike, take a road trip, or even a big city, but do something notable and create memories. Adventuring is a time where you can let go of the everyday life you live and just relax. It is stress-free, especially during the times where you are stressed out.

4. Keep a journal. If you are like me, you may already have one, or two. Having a journal is something that has always helped me through good times and bad. It is a place where you can write down how your day went or even one of your deepest secrets. A journal can be public, or stay private forever. It is a chance for you to be able to look back on memories you’ve made throughout the year and see the growth you’ve made as a person.

5. Explore a new religion. I have never been a truly religious person, but lately I have let my mind wonder and have learned many things along the way. Explore the cultures of others, while trying to better yourself. If that is not your thing, not to worry, explore your happiness in ways you never have before.

6. Let love find you. In college, we are all looking to find that special someone. If you have been waiting, for what feels like forever, don’t worry about it. Love is a rare thing, and for the relationship you are trying to find, don’t forget that patience is a virtue. Don’t go out looking for that person to sweep you off your feet; stand grounded and let the cards play correctly, and just be happy.

7. Don’t let working out take over your life. Like I have said, everyone puts down “Work out more” for a New Year’s resolution. That is fine but don’t let that control your life. Working out is a good thing to do, no matter what time it is. If you are fearing that extra weight from after the holidays, just eat right for the remainder of the break, maybe do a little jogging and get back to the gym when you return to school. Don’t go crazy, just do what you can without it taking over your life.

8. Learn something new. With a new year, you are able to start fresh, and that means taking on something foreign to your life. For me, I have always wanted to learn how to DJ, but have never gotten around to it. For others it can vary from learning how to swim, to baking a cake. A new year gives us the opportunity to add onto the skills we’ve taken from the past and jump into the future.

9. Turn off your phone at the dinner table or when hanging out with friends. Recognize that time spent with people you care about is a blessing and it should not be taken up by being on your phone the whole time. Save that for later.

10. Eat the last piece of cake. Don’t be shy to eating desserts, because desserts are what make people happy. Don’t avoid your favorite cheesecake in the dining hall, when you know they only make it on Wednesday. Go in, and eat that cheesecake.

11. Embrace your emotions. Cry when you are sad or happy. Laugh when you are happy or sad. Whatever emotions you are feeling, don’t try and hide them. Life is good, you just need to always know that.

12. Stop judging people based on rumors and the way they look. This will get you no where, and that is a promise. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, and it the people who constantly make fun of others that are breaking down people’s self confidence. It is ridiculous. Believe everyone is beautiful, and all will be good.

13. Treat yourself to nice things. If that means an iced coffee after class or a new Alex and Ani bracelet, don’t be afraid to spend money. I’m not saying this should be an everyday occurrence, because at the end of the day we are college students, but once in a while doesn’t hurt. Reward yourself the way you should be, and this will lead to a happy year.

14. What is for you will not pass you. You life was given to you for a reason, so show what that reason is. Everyday we are granted things that we aren’t necessarily sure we deserve, but if something is meant to be, it will happen. I promise. I learned that the hard way, but eventually you realize everything in your life has a place, and to forget the things that don’t.

Happy New Year, everyone and don’t forget to Keep Calm and College On all year long.

Are You In For The Winter BREAK?

You’re headed home for the holidays; it is time for your family, friends and of course partying.

New Years is the time for new beginnings, but what about that fling back at school?

Remember that? holdinghandsblog

All semester, you’ve been getting close to that special someone, but don’t know what you’ll do with the month apart.

You aren’t to the level of even thinking about going to visit him or her, but you also aren’t willing to let go.

So, where do you stand? Do you think with a month off, everything will be back to normal when you get back to school?

If that is what you want, do not be shy, but instead focus on the prize. Winter break will fly by with a little motivation.

Being away from someone you like can be tough, especially if things just got going. It can be tricky with distractions from home, but don’t let that get in the way.

With this last week on campus, make sure things are secure with that certain someone through dining hall dates and hanging out after class.

If things seem solid, than kiss those home town dates goodbye because things are looking A- OK.

And there is the typical Friends video relating to all of our lives.

This means some contact over the break, which will also see if you have what it takes to be away from someone you’ve been crushing on for quite some time.

longdistanceIf things are going well, expect to get back to school with some new years resolution and of course open arms, but if the long distance thing is just not showing you anything exciting, maybe you need to wait it out a little and see where time can take you.

So enjoy the time you have home, you deserve it. Don’t think about what could, should or would be when you get back. Take one step at a time and Keep Calm and College On.

Finals Week Tips To Success

collegeexamsIt is that time of year again; Late nights in the library, five coffee runs a day, countless amount of essays and projects due. That’s right, it is finals week.

Every college may have different weeks of misery, but this is usually the time where we are thinking of one thing, Winter Break.

You may be swamped in different things, such as studying for that Chemistry final or the five page paper due in three days, but here are a few tips to acing the week, and getting home as soon as possible.

1. The library is your friend. Use this stuffy, dark place as a guide to help you stay on track and focus on what you need to get done. Stay on the “quiet floor” for little interruptions, and your paper will be done in no time.

coffee2. Coffee, coffee and more coffee. Or caffeine. Any way you put it, caffeine is a much needed source when drowning in final exams. Yes, you may be up all night, but isn’t that the point? Caffeine will help you stay on task, and awake during those 100 question multiple choice exam. Trust me, I drink about five cups of coffee a day during this time. It is needed to keep me sane.

3. Don’t let the party scene fool you. Yes, it is okay for you to get distracted once in a while during the exam period, but just know it is very hard to get started in the morning after a night out on the town. The morning after partying can concur to laziness and throw you off track for studying and getting those good grade. I’m not saying to be a dud when the final exams come around, just have a strong balance of what is important, and what can wait until the entire month off from school.

4. Take some time to yourself and relax. Have you been studying for hours in the small quiet room in the library? After completing seven pages out of your 10 page research paper, you deserve a nice hot chocolate, a some time to relax, because it is almost over. Take a half hour to an hour for some ” you time” and give yourself some time to refresh before jumping to the next task. It is not healthy to just sit and type or read notes for hours at a time. Break it up.

Finals are almost completed, and the time to sit back with family and friends at home is just around the corner. Push through the stressful times, and know it will all be worth it in the end. Even though you are stressed and running around like crazy, don’t forget to Keep Calm and College On.

Roommates Situations: For Better or For Worse

well-perfect-roommates-college-ecard-someecardsSometimes you love them, and sometimes you hate them, but when in college, roommates are usually an inevitable part of your life.

There are many different types of roommate situations, some being great and some being the exact opposite. As college students, we are now adults and have to deal with these people in our own ways, and by that, there are many different paths to go by. If you are lucky, like me, you will have a pretty good rooming situation, and choose wisely who you will be sharing a room with. Sometimes the person you thought you knew, is not the same when you are actually living with them. Thankfully, there are ways to living a great life, while sharing a room with someone else…Especially according you your Residence Life department.

There are a few tips in how keep good grounds, all the way from the start.

1. Make a set of ground rules the first couple of weeks into school. If you are sharing things such as a television or fridge, tell your roommate what can be shared, and what cannot, because sometimes, just sharing a few things can lead into a whole lot more. Also, if your roommate has a significant other, tell them how you feel, right off the bat, about having that person in the room, and the times you need your room to be…Well, yours. You cannot expect your roommate to know all of these things, so be clear and stay happy.

2. Address things while they are small, not when you are about to explode. If your roommate likes to eat all of your food and not replace it, tell them the first or second time they do this. If your roommate has friends in your room while you are trying to study, roommaterespectively tell them to leave. If your roommate hits the snooze button 10 times at 7:30 in the morning, and you do not have class until 1 p.m., tell them to stop. You need to have a voice, because it is your room as well. Don’t be afraid to tell your roommate your pet peeves, because honestly, they probably have some of their own.

3. Be open to change, because change is good! If you and your roommate do not have the same group of friends, be open to meeting new people and that goes the same for your roommate. It can bring you closer, if you are not close already, and show them that you want to be apart of each others lives. Change can also go along with mixing up the style of the room, and compromising what looks best. College is all about being open-minded, so it all starts where you live.

4.If you and your roommate are not friends to begin with, be friendly, but don’t expect an outside relationship more than just plain roommates. Always smile, and say hi outside of the dorm, but for the most part, you cannot always be the best of friends. It happens sometimes, and if you go in expecting only that, it will be hard to deal with. Be friendly, but also form a social life with other people outside of the residence hall, making it easier for the both of you.

5. Lastly, stick to the golden rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated. If the person you are sharing a room with and you do not get along, don’t result to fighting or being rude, just treat them with goldenrespect, and move on with your life. If you treat your dorm room how I treat mine, which is occasionally hanging out during the day, and the place where you sleep, there should be no problem in the living situation. If you are the type of person who loves being in your room, just keep to yourself and carry on with your day. This tip should work if all else fails.

There may be some issues that you and your roommate have to deal with, and sometimes time is key. When living together, it might take some time to deal with the little detail, and later the big details.

There are many different types of roommates, so figuring out which one you have is crucial. You do not want to be stuck with a party animal when all you want to do is study. Finding someone with the same or similar priorities is crucial when living with someone else.

If the person you are rooming with and you get along perfectly fine, consider yourself lucky. Think about how to bond with that person and make your friendship stronger, so you do not have to deal with petty fights down the road. If you communicate and have good chemistry with your roomie, try to keep things as is, but do not over do it. You want to have your own friends, along with the friendship you are forming with your roommate.

For upperclassmen, this is easy. You know who you want to live with, and hopefully have chosen the person you are sharing a room with. Even so, feeling out living with a specific person can be crucial to success. Just because you are friends with that person, does not mean you know there habits, flaws, and way of life.

All together, living with a roommate can be ideal, in the middle, or a complete and utter mess. Being understanding and learning more about person you are living with will bring success to the living situation and hopefully succumb any problems or stress you are having. So don’t forget to remember ( and tell your roommate) to Keep Calm and College On.

Easy Microwave Recipies For The Dorm Room

We all know getting to the dining hall is a tough task in between classes, homework, extracurricular, and all that jazz, but what if everything you needed to eat just came from the comfort of your microwave.

Yes, I said it: Microwave. When you think of microwave dinners, you probably think of Hot Pockets, or the Hungry Man meals. After this, you’ll be thinking along the lines of five star meals, college style that is.

What's cooking?

What’s cooking?

They may not be the healthiest meals in the world, but they are quick, easy, and a lot of fun. If you have the creative mind like me, using these as a substitute to the dining hall may be the best thing for you. Even spicing it up and making your own meals can bring you a long way.

Drum roll please, your life is about to change, because I am starting with dessert.

A Steaming Mug of Cake

Here is what you’ll need:

  • 4 Tbsp. Self-Rising Flour
  • 4 Tbsp. Sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. Oil
  • 3 Tbsp. Milk
  • 2 Tbsp. Unsweetened Cocoa
  • 3 Tbsp. Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Splash of Vanilla
  • 1 Large Coffee Mug

First, mix all your dry ingredients in your mug, then add the egg. Mix well, then add the milk and oil, mixing some more. Stir in the chocolate chips and vanilla. Pop it in the microwave for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes and you’ll have your cake AND you can eat it too. So yummy!

Okay, since everyone LOVES dessert, or at least I do, cookies are one of my favorites, especially warm chocolate chip. Yes, I’m one of those risky people that east cookie dough, but sometimes I’m in the mood for the real deal. Learning how to make one in the microwave may be dangerous if you are like me, so take precaution when reading this.

Microwave Cookie in a Cup :

First gather your ingredients and your microwavable bowl (like a small soup bowl)

Mix is all up!

Mix is all up!

  • 1 tbsp melted butter (you can use the bowl you are making the cookie in)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 drops vanilla
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 tbsp chocolate chips
  • Pinch of salt

Now put it all together, and stick it in the microwave for 40-60 seconds and there ya have it: Cookie in a Cup.

Alright, now that you are set for all your dessert needs, here comes some interesting dinner choices, with just using Ramen Noodles.

What can YOU do with your Ramen?

What can YOU do with your Ramen?

When I think of Ramen, I think of boring, salty and an identity crisis between being a soup, or pasta dish. Your view on this fill-in food will all change: now.

1. Pour heated marinara sauce over hot boiled Ramen Noodles, to have the slightest taste of that Sunday spaghetti, in half the time that is.

2. Heat up some of that chilli you may or may not haven taken from the dining hall and pour that over those hot boiled Ramen Noodles.

3. Add of a chicken flavored seasoning packet, 1 tablespoon butter, and 2-3 tablespoons milk to a package of boiled drained Ramen for a creamy side dish.

4. Mix cooled boiled Ramen noodles with three-bean salad and some additional Italian dressing

If you don’t have time for these yummy dinner ideas, try a quicker snack of just breaking off pieces of dry Ramen and dipping it into your favorite salsa, for the chips and salsa effect.

Okay, now that I’ve blown your mind, try different recipes and ideas found either online, or simply made up. You never know what you are going to get. It may be completely delicious, or it might be a complete dud. I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Websites such as Pinterest have many other simple meals, that take no longer than 10 minutes, so browse around and see what fits you. Don’t forget to eat up and Keep Calm and College On.

The True American Horror Story: Doing Laundry

Let’s face it; one of the most dreaded things about coming to college is doing your own laundry. I hate it, my friends hate it, and even the people passing in the laundry room hate it. Laundry just sucks.

The final outcome of the laundry room

The final outcome of the laundry room

Now, there are many different things you need to know about doing laundry in your college dormitory, and in the past year and a half, I have learned the hard way. This is real life people; things shrink, discolor and especially BLEED, and if you know laundry, you know this means when that new red t-shirt mixes colors with your white sweater, making it pink.

Laundry truly is a struggle when dealing with a full class load, and extracurricular activities and homework and definitely laziness.

I feel like when I think about doing laundry, I always push it off with thoughts like ” Oh, it can wait another day.” or “I have enough clothes to last me the rest of the week.” And most of that is true. I do have enough clothes, but the clothes such as yoga pants and sweatshirts are all at the bottom of what? The laundry basket.

When I get to this point, I need to thing of how much time I truly want to be doing laundry. At my school, the washing machines take 31 minutes, while the dryers take 50. Due to this inconvenience, the dryers are always used up, because of the time difference.

Doing laundry in college does take a sufficient amount of thought. I try to do laundry when not many people are in the building, but it takes a little while to get the feel of these times, until everyone is going through their regular routine.

When you finally get the energy to go down to the laundry room, there are a few tips and words of advice that might help you out.

1. Try separating your light and dark clothing, so you can select the correct wash on the washing machine. If you just do not feel like doing that, wash everything on cold. I can tell you, that is what I do.

2. Take everything out of your pockets. You do not want that pack of 5 Gum all over your favorite pair of jeans.

Example of too much soap

Example of too much soap

3. Use the right amount of detergent. If you use too little, your clothes are not the cleanliness they should be. If you use to much… The picture to the left will happen.

4.READ THE DIRECTIONS on the washing machines and dryers. Trust me, they are not as easy as they look. With the touch of a button, all your clothes could be the size of Barbie clothes, with the color faded, and tears in them. I promise, the directions are going to be your friends. Hopefully, your schools will have a “Normal” setting.

5. Do not over-pack the washing machine and/or dryer. This is a helpful piece of advice, because packing these machines can result in sopping wet clothes, after they’ve been in the dryer for an hour. I’ve been there. I think there is enough space to fit all my clothes in the dryer and BAM!, after 3 long hours and three cycles through the drying process, my clothes are finally done. That is not how it is supposed to work.

6. If you are using two or more washing machines and/or dryers, make sure you pick ones that are close or next to each other. There has been a number of times that I misplace my clothes because I can not remember what machines I used. It happens to the best of us, so use them wisely.

7. Stains are the worst thing ever, I know. I am such a messy eater, my friends cannot take me anywhere. When I am doing laundry, I pretty much have to sort through the clothes to find the different stains I’ve cause each week. It is really smart to buy a spray on strain remover, or stain removing stick before doing laundry, because you want to treat it as best stainsas you can. There are many different stain removers in stores, so pick one that works best for your messy needs.

8. Lastly, after your washing and drying process and the countless hours in the laundry room, after your clothes are dry and ready to go back up to your room, hang them right away. Do not wait for hours because you are too lazy, just do it. If you do not, it will result in wrinkled shirts and stiff jeans. Get to hanging.

So when deciding whether or not you want to do laundry, remember the times and these tips and you will have success. Maybe picking one day a week to do this tedious chore will also help. Whatever works for you! Also, you may not want to look like this guy…But than again, maybe you do…

So when sitting down in the muggy laundry room, just remember to be happy, and  Keep Calm and College On.

Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October. A time of color and season change with the autumn arrival. Everyone thinks about the oranges, and yellows filling the trees and outdoors, but one more color to think about is pink.

Pink is the color that is associated with Breast Cancer Awareness, which takes place every October of every year. Not saying that we shouldn’t have cancer awareness all of the time, but for this month, the world comes together as we focus on such a powerful statement.

Cancer has always been something that holds true meaning in my life. I always feel that there is never enough that we could do to raise money and find cures.

So, since it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there are many facts you probably did not know. The National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. has a few facts that they felt the world needed to know. I picked out a few here, but you can always click the link embedded to find out more.

Did you know…That one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Did you know…Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.
Did you know…Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.

These statistics blow my mind, and make the life we live, a little more real. There are many things you can do as a person to help spread the awareness throughout your area, and country.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. has plans in order to stay aware of your body, and to help treat breast cancer earlier than you would without knowing. It is called Early Detection and it is designed to let people to know what to do and where to go, if breast cancer arises within themselves. Know the signs and symptoms, and how to self examine, and who to go to if you ever need to. Always have a plan.

One thing the NBCF shares to do, is fundraise. Starting a bake sale, or ticketed event such as a benefits concert are all things that people will want to get together for, and take a stand for awareness. Even a sports game dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness is awesome. I know where I am from, there were “Pink” games every October. There are many things that go on in many different areas, including Breast Cancer walks, such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and these are all over. It is run by the American Cancer Society, and all you have to do is go to their website, and enter your zip code to find more information around you. Even if you don’t have time, donating to a specific team works as well.
Another thing you can do as a person, is just spread the pink. Pink shoes, pink shirts, pink hair, pink hats, pink socks, anything! Show people that you care, and are trying to spread the love and awareness. It really does make a difference.
Whatever you can do, whether it is big or small, matters. So when you are going about your day, don’t forget to Keep Calm and Think Pink.

Friends With Benefits or Whatever You Want To Call Them in College

Photo  from Friends with Benefits (2011)

When I think of the term “Friends With Benefits”, one of my first thoughts is the lovely chemistry between Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake in their 2011 blockbuster Friends with Benefits. The awesome, scandalous relationship they portray is wanted by college students all around the world these days. What we don’t remember is the way the hit movie ends and how the two formed a real relationship.

Friends with benefits. What kind of relationship status is that? You sure don’t see that on Facebook. Searching this on Urban Dictionary will give you a number of definitions, which is why I embedded the link. The most accurate one states
Two friends who have an [intimate] relationship without being emotionally involved…” Pretty self explanatory, right? Having a friend with benefits can actually be beneficial, but before starting this, you may want to find out what you want first. Studies show that this kind of relationship is for many people, so maybe it will be for you.

When starting a situation like this, you may want to get a feel for the person you are with, even if he or she is your friend. This may mean seeing if they get attached fast, or just want the benefits of this relationship. If you are in it for the true friends with benefits type feel, then the second choose would be great. If you are they type that would like to be in a relationship, then maybe reconsider what you are getting into.

There are many different types of this relationship status. For instance, you could be in the “F w/ B” stage that only happens after a party with one of your cuter friends or you could actually really like the person, but just want the physicality of the relationship. If you are sticking to the traditional friends with benefits, it could really just mean you are friends that enjoy being more than friends, if you know what I mean. It is a sticky situation, due to the fact that life and love is so unpredictable. Usually this person is a friend, so it is not like you need to get to know them like a regular relationship.
Glamour Magazine has 10 Rules of Being Friends with Benefits that should everyone should abide by.

Many different things can happen when you put yourself out there for a “No Strings Attached” kind of thing. One day, you or your intimate other want the same thing, and the next be completely different. I think that is where the main problem of this label stems from. You never truly understand and get to know the other person, therefore, you may like them more than they like you, and your whole plan gets screwed up. Sometimes friends with benefits gets too much to handle for some, and they just want a relationship, but on the other hand, the other person is not ready. If this person is truly your friend, you also have to think about risking the friendship for the frisky. Friends with benefits is easy for some, and hard for the others. It is almost like fast forwarding a relationship, by skipping over the emotional aspect, and jumping right into the physical aspect. It can work, but both people have to willing and decide beforehand that it what both parties want.

There is nothing wrong with friends with benefits. We are in college, and college is a time to find yourself and have fun. No one here is rushing you into marriage or even a serious committed relationship, but you as a college student you need to be aware of what you are getting into. If friends with benefits is your thing, stick to one person and one person only. You are here to have fun, not sleep around.

If your friends with benefits scandal doesn’t feel right, do not be afraid to speak up. Sometimes things get crazy, and you just want the friend back. It is normal for two friends to feel that way, therefore, there should be no holding back of feeling. You want to establish that in your “F w/ B”, early, therefore no one gets hurt, and the friendship can still thrive.

Whatever you choose to do, make yourself happy, because that is most important.
Don’t forget to Keep Calm and College On.
